Charles Evan Hughes (1862-1948) was born in New York. Son of a Baptist preacher, he graduated from Brown University (1881) and Columbia University Law School (1884). In 1906, he was elected governor of New York, defeating William Randolph Hearst. In 1910, he was appointed by President Taft to the Supreme Court. In 1916, at the Republican National Convention, he became his party’s presidential candidate. On the November 7, 1916, election, he was narrowly defeated by Woodrow Wilson for the presidency.
