The U.S. Government printed these notes for use in Hawaii and the Pacific during World War ll. The reason the government printed these special notes was in the event that Hawaii or any of the Islands were taken over by the enemy, they could quickly distinguish these from regular notes. In the event of an invasion they would be devalued thus making them worthless to the enemy. They were easily distinguished from regular notes because of the large overprint “HAWAII” on the reverse and the fact that the front of the bill had brown seals and serial numbers. Use of any other currency in these areas was forbidden by law. Soon after they were issued, in June of 1942, they quickly became the only circulating currency in these areas.
