This saying, yelled by a supporter at a 1948 rally in Seattle, probably best describes the personality of Harry Truman. Truman, who had just completed the balance of FDR’s administration (FDR died in 1945), was forced to make a series of very difficult decisions in the final months of World War II. It is felt by many that his bold moves significantly shortened the duration of the war. When he ran for president in 1948, few believed he could beat the Republican, Thomas Dewey. In fact, so sure that Dewey would win, the Chicago Tribune sent out its early edition with the headline “Dewey Defeats Truman”. But on January 20, 1949, it was Truman and not Dewey who took the Presidential Oath of Office.
