The 1940 Presidential election featured the Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt (running for a third term) and his Republican counterpart Wendell Willkie. In this particular election, the Willkie campaign produced numerous anti-Roosevelt slogan buttons. One in particular brings special mention. In 1940, Roosevelt’s son Elliott applied for a commission as a captain in the Army Air Corps. When F.D.R. granted the promotion, the Republicans jumped on the issue, crying nepotism. Immediately, Willkie’s campaign began producing buttons identical or similar to the above pictured button making the public aware of F.D.R.’s “indiscretion”.
