The China Service Medal was authorized by the Navy Department on August 23, 1940. It was awarded to personnel of the Navy and Marine Corps who served ashore in China or who were attached to any vessel in support of operations in China (July 7, 1937—September 7, 1939). It was also awarded to personnel of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard for service in China, Taiwan and the Matsu Straits from September 2, 1945 to April 1, 1957.
