These Confederate bonds represent the first series of bonds that were offered by the newly formed Confederate States of America. Only three days after their initial offering on April 20, 1861, the initial subscription of $5,000,000 had been sold along with $3,000,000 in over-subscriptions. The support, as expected, came primarily from the South, and from Southern banks in particular. Additional support later came from Europe, particularly England, which had an economic interest in the South. These initial bonds are much scarcer than ones which would be issued later. Initially backed by cotton, these Confederate bonds of 1861, with some interest receipts attached, are available in the following denominations:
