The Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie. VOC) was established in 1602. Besides being the world’s first multinational corporation, it was also the first to issue stock, and by 1669, it was the richest corporation the world had ever seen. The Dutch East India Company was the first “megacorporation”; it had the power to wage war, imprison convicts, negotiate treaties and even coin money. The Dutch duit carrying the monogram of the Dutch East India Company circulated throughout Dutch Indonesia and even in the Americas. These 7/8” duits feature the “VOC” arms of the Dutch East India Company, date in the 1700’s, and were found buried in the ground in Ceylon, probably when the British invaded that country. In Good or better condition with signs of cleaning, these Dutch duits of the “VOC” are an important part of two centuries of Central Asian commerce.
