Herbert Hoover was the Republican presidential choice in 1928. He ran a very successful campaign, defeating his Democratic rival Alfred E. Smith, with a popular vote margin of over 6 million votes and an electoral advantage of 444 to 87. In his attempt for re-election, which occurred during the “Great Depression”, he was soundly defeated in the 1932 Presidential election by Franklin D. Roosevelt, losing by over 7 million popular votes and an electoral disadvantage of 59 to 472.
