In 1823, the Monroe Doctrine was issued warning European powers to refrain from any interference, control or influence in North and South America. A century later, in 1923, the Monroe Doctrine silver half was issued to commemorate the event. Issued in San Francisco and carrying an “S” mintmark, this coin features two key figures associated with the Monroe Doctrine: James Monroe and John Quincy Adams. The western hemisphere is portrayed on the reverse in forms that suggest two female figures. We offer this historic coin (dated 1923), with a mintage of only 274,077.
