The Eastern Front Medal was instituted on May 26, 1942, to mark service on the German Eastern Front during the period of November 15, 1941 to April 15, 1942. It was commissioned to recognize the hardships endured by German and Axis powers personnel, combatant or non-combatant, during the bitter Russian winter of 1941-1942. To qualify for the award, one had to serve a minimum of 14 days of active combat or 60 days of non-combat, or be wounded or killed (posthumous award) in action, or have an injury caused by frostbite severe enough to warrant the issuance of a wound badge.
