Ancient Romans were known to wear flowing togas and capes. These garments were fastened by a fibula, also known as a brooch. Made of bronze and fashioned as an early safety pin, these typically consisted of four different parts (the bridge, pin, spring and hinge), these pieces of craftsmanship represented an improvement on the Neolithic straight pin which was less secure and could fall out. There were hundreds of different fibula designs and many were specific to status, class or military rank. We believe our collection to be from the 2nd century A.D., pins are intact (but stationary due to age).
