United States Hard Times Tokens were privately issued during the financially troubled times of the 1830’s and the 1840’s. Made in the likeness of large cents of the time, these tokens were struck to alleviate the coin shortage, and often times to express negative political views of the administrations of Presidents Andrew Jackson (1829-1837) and Martin Van Buren (1837-1841).
