In order to provide care and confinement for those suffering from leprosy, the Venezuelan government established and maintained a leper colony known as the Isla de Providencia. Since it was separate from the general population, special coinage was issued which could only circulate within the leprosarium. Discontinued decades ago after the illness was almost fully extinguished and after medical research revealed there was little to no risk of transmission of the disease through coin handling, these coins disappeared forever from circulation.
