The year was 1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt was running for an unprecedented third term and Europe was in a state of war. Wendell Willkie, a former Democrat who had once supported F.D.R., became the Republican nominee for President. Although 78% of the nation’s newspapers endorsed Willkie and rural America supported him, the victory ultimately went to F.D.R. by a margin of almost 5 million popular votes. Time has marched on. Willkie died in 1944 and F.D.R. in 1945, but these Willkie campaign buttons have survived over 70 years. We have two buttons to offer, both in near mint condition.
