Early 1942 marked a significant increase in the use of minefields and thus minefield markers. Minefields were used to create artificial obstacles in zones that had no natural defenses. Metal minefield markers like the one offered here were used to warn Allied U.S. and British troops of the existence of these minefields. Our research shows that these minefield markers were probably headed for North Africa where troops of British Lt. General Montgomery were battling Germany’s General Rommel, better known as the “Desert Fox”. An early conclusion of the North African campaign thankfully made the use of these particular markers unnecessary. This World War II allied minefield marker is triangular in shape with sharp protruding corners and is adorned by the traditional international symbol of death, the “skull and crossbones”. Red in color, with white lettering, measuring approximately 12.75 inches across and 6.5 inches high and weighing approximately one pound, the uniface sign is holed at the top. We were fortunate to have purchased two boxes of these Allied minefield markers of WWII that have remained in unopened cartons for seven decades!
